  • Helmet

Helmets are a legal requirement in Australia and hefty fines apply for failure to wear one. You will also need to know how to wear it and when to replace it so it actually works when you need it.

  • Bike Lights

Again, lights are a legal requirement if you’re riding at night (plus it’s a really good idea to be visible to cars). Buy a USB rechargeable set and carry some cheap back-ups so you’re always ready to go.

    Shop bike lights
  • Bike Lock

If you’re leaving your bike anywhere you will need a lock. The more expensive your bike and dodgier the area you’re locking in, then the better the lock you will need.

The Nice-To-Haves

A wise cyclist once said “It’s better to be looking at it than looking for it”.

This is especially true if you’ve just had a puncture and it’s started to rain.

The other accessories you can carry as a cyclist can range from the ‘super useful for every bike rider’ (tubes, pump, tyre levers, chain lube, drink bottle and cage) to the ‘comes in handy in certain situations’ (pannier bags, racks, baskets, gloves etc).

The best advice is to think about the type of riding you do and consider how much nicer it would be with the right gear.
