How to choose a Ladies Vintage bike

How to choose a Ladies Vintage bike

Here at Reid Cycles, we love our vintage bikes! Vintage style bikes embody freedom, convenience and style. With features like full-length mudguards and baskets, there's no wonder why they're some of our top selling bikes.

We also understand that there are a lot of vintage bikes out there to choose from and it can be hard to find the perfect one for you. So we decided to do the hard work for you and put all the information you need to know in one place. This blog will go through all the key components to look for when choosing a vintage style bike - making it easy for you to get out on the bike paths sooner!

Vintage Frame Style

Frame style is the foundation for your look with a vintage bike and there are various things to consider when choosing which bike frame suits you. Two major considerations are; design and material.

As for design, you can't go wrong with a traditional and understated step through frame which is featured on all three of our top selling women's models; the Vintage Ladies Classic Plus, Vintage Ladies Lite and Vintage Ladies Deluxe. The step through frame is specifically designed for women, making it simple and easy to get on and off the bike.

You should also consider frame material, as this makes a difference in weight, performance and durability of a bike.

Gears

When it comes to gears, a singlespeed is a nice, easy option that's very low maintenance, however it's not for everyone. There are a few other options that are featured on our vintage style bikes; 6 or 7 speed, or a internally geared hub.

6 or 7 speeds - are great if you need to tackle any hills, plus makes it easy to carry a load in pannier bags or baskets. Featured on our Vintage Ladies Classic Plus and Vintage Ladies Lite.

Internally geared hub such as a 3-speed - gives the low maintenance of a single speed while maintaining the advantages of gears. Featured on our Vintage Ladies Deluxe.

Brakes

With brakes, it is always best to look for 'dual pivot caliper brakes or 'v-brakes'. These modern styles are far more reliable, powerful and safe compared to traditional calipers brakes. 'Dual Pivot Caliper Brakes' look a little more traditional. 'V-brakes' are also great and are common on high quality vintage style bikes.

Accessories

The main accessories that you should look for in any vintage style bike are the mudguards, chainguards, pannier racks and of course baskets.

Full Length Mudguard - means that water left on the road after rain isn’t a problem. You’ll stay dry.

Chainguard - prevents your trouser legs brushing against the chain and getting a smudge of oil.

Pannier Rack - is also a great accessory that allows you to pop on a rear basket or pannier bag, so you can carry extra bits and pieces easily.

Baskets -  Baskets are a great add on to any vintage bike! Our front and rear baskets add classic vintage style, and functionality to your bike allowing for you to easily carry all your things without a backpack.

No matter what style or accessories you go for, choosing a good quality vintage style bike with modern components means a comfortable and classic bike that you’re sure to love for years to come!
